Landscapes – a series of photos I took between 1990 and 1993 during my travels through the southwest of the USA.

Before I decided to capture the breathtaking natural sights of the southwest, I focused  on consumer electronics and food-photography. In my studio in Düsseldorf I shot products for packgaging, advertising and catalogues. Please visit my FOOD+STILLS Website.

Working with studio light, it has always been my ambition to recreate the impression of natural sunlight in my studio.

After years of crereating the perfect light in a studio setting, it only made sense to capture the sunlight in it‘s natural beauty. I packed my Sinar P2 8x10 inch, about 20 film cassettes, every objective I had, stands, my assistant and myself and took off.

Our first trip started in Denver across Salt Lake City to Alburqeurque. From there on we traveled all over the southwest up to Los Angeles. We were guided by the sun, the weather, a compass and a map (not on a smartphone).

When I found a promising location I searched for the perfect point of view and analyzed the course oft he sun to determine, at what time excactly I wanted to shoot the photo.

Then we had to wait. And wait. And wait. But the breathtaking surroundings made the wait a beautiful memory itself.

When the time arrived we set the camera, loaded the cassettes with ectachrome64 sheetfilms, controled the exposure and pushed the wire release. Three shots with only a 1/3 difference in the shutter had to be enough.

And that was it – no polaroid, no possibility to double check, it just had to be spot on.

We securely packed up the exposed sheetfilms and had to wait until we were back in Los Angeles to develop them. The waiting time was almost unbearable but oh so worth it – seeing the developed films three or four weeks after taking the photos – no words can describe this feeling.

Now you have the chance to see the results here on this site.
